Project Identity
ECHO – Engaging Citizens in Honest Opinion is a citizen-led European initiative working to strengthen information integrity and democratic resilience in the digital age.
In a world where disinformation, AI-generated hallucinations, biased content, and online manipulation can spread faster than verified facts, ECHO brings citizens, researchers, public institutions, healthcare professionals, journalists, fact-checkers, educators, and civil society organisations together to build a more trusted information ecosystem.
The project combines civic empowerment, participatory design, media literacy, responsible AI use, technological innovation, and community-based action. Its goal is not only to help people recognise disinformation, but also to enable them to actively prevent its spread, verify information responsibly, and contribute to healthier public dialogue.
Our Vision
ECHO envisions a Europe where citizens are not passive receivers of information, but active guardians of truth, transparency, and democratic participation.
Through local pilots, training activities, awareness campaigns, serious games, hackathons, community hubs, and open-access tools, ECHO supports people of different ages, backgrounds, and professional roles to critically assess information, identify manipulation, understand AI-generated risks, and make informed decisions.
What makes ECHO different
ECHO places citizens at the centre. Instead of treating disinformation only as a technical problem, the project approaches it as a social, civic, educational, and ethical challenge.
The project focuses on real-life contexts where disinformation has major consequences: public administration, healthcare, citizen participation, media, journalism, fact-checking, and AI-generated content. It develops tools and training resources that are practical, inclusive, multilingual, reusable, and accessible beyond the project’s lifetime.
